Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Trauma

What is PTSD and trauma?

PTSD is a particular set of reactions that can develop in people who have been through a traumatic event which threatened their life or safety, or that of other around them. As a result, the person may experience feelings of intense fear, helplessness or horror.

What are the tests used for assessments?

We have specific, objective testing instruments to evaluate PTSD/trauma and related symptoms. Our experienced psychologists provide PTSD assessments utilising the following assessment:

  • Clinician Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS-5)
  • Structured Clinical Interview

The CAPS-5 is considered the gold standard for PTSD diagnosis.

What are the benefits of assessment?

Picton Psychology offers PTSD assessments for children, adolescents and adults. Research has shown early diagnosis and treatment reduces PTSD symptom severity. Through the use of psychological assessment, we can determine whether or not the individual has PTSD, objectively identify the severity of symptoms, and determine how to best tailor treatment for your specific needs.

Some benefits of assessment include:

  • Provide an accurate diagnosis
  • Provide an overview of the frequency and intensity of the effects of trauma
  • Determine the most beneficial treatment, including tailored treatment plans
  • Evaluate PTSD/trauma related symptoms

What does the assessment process look like?

The process of a PTSD assessment involves five stages:

  1. Initial appointment to perform a thorough interview to obtain all relevant background information.
  2. Administration of Diagnostic Assessment
  3. Structured Clinical Interview(s)
  4. Your psychologist will complete a comprehensive report, including any relevant diagnoses, suggestions and recommendations for treatment
  5. Feedback session to discuss the results from the PTSD assessment and report
