Provisional Psychologist Information

What is a Provisional Psychologist?

A Provisional Psychologist is classified as an individual who has completed their Tertiary education, and who is qualified to undertake practice as a Provisional Psychologist under the supervision of an AHPRA board approved supervisor.

Provisional Psychologists are required to undertake a minimum one-year period of practice and weekly supervision sessions with their AHPRA board approved supervisor, along with additional professional development. This one-year period enables the Provisional Psychologists to develop their skills and apply their knowledge and education.

What is supervision for Provisional Psychologists?

The purpose of supervision is for the supervisor to guide and provide feedback on the provisional psychologist’s practice, and to assess personal, professional and educational development in the context of their experience of providing safe, appropriate and high-quality care to clients.

Supervision is an interactive process between the Provisional Psychologist and the supervisor. Supervision provides the provisional psychologist with a professionally stimulating and supportive opportunity for growth.

Supervision involves a special type of mentoring relationship in which the supervisor provides supportive direction, facilitative activities, and instructive critique to help provisional psychologists to achieve their professional goals.

What type of service will I receive from a Provisional Psychologist?

Provisional Psychologists practice under the same guidelines as fully registered psychologists, and when working with clients’ provisional psychologists provide the same service as fully registered psychologists, with an added measure of having a supervisor to check in with to ensure that all clients are being supported appropriately.
